Nucleo receives funding from Luminate

Nucleo has received a grant from the international organization Luminate to advance towards its institutional development and strengthen innovation in new journalism formats.

GRANT DETAILS. The US$190,000 grant will be disbursed in two installments over two years.

"With these resources, we will be better positioned to act as a newstech company, that is, one that develops technology as journalism, and not just for journalism," said Sérgio Spagnuolo, executive director of the Nucleo.

In addition to institutional development, the funding will allow Nucleo to advance in various other areas and activities:

"The grant allows us to scale production and make our products available in a more sustainable way, relying on good management of processes and technological infrastructure," said Felippe Mercurio, technology director at Nucleo.

STRATEGIES. The development of new products, which will subsidize the sustainability of the business, will be fundamental in the near future, as well as the implementation of new digital strategies.

"These resources will give us the opportunity to develop and execute longer-term strategies, focused on increasing the impact of our journalism," said strategy manager Jade Drummond.

ABOUT LUMINATE. The organization was founded in 2018 by Pierre Omidyar, one of the founders of eBay, and biologist Pam Omidyar, and has already supported other Brazilian organizations such as InternetLab, Conectas, Nexo, Instituto Igarapé, Agência Pública and Abraji, among others.

"Luminate is a serious organization, with a strong commitment to democracy, human rights, freedom of expression and access to information," said Spagnuolo.

This is the second, and more substantial, grant that the Nucleo received from Luminate, the first being for the 2022 electoral coverage.
